Emerald Skeleton Tarantula (Ephebopus uatuman)

…is a species of skeleton tarantula native to Brazil and neighboring countries. Like other tarantulas the emerald skeleton tarantula is a burrower and makes its home on the forest floor where it feeds on passing insects and other invertebrates. The emerald green that shows on their carapace is only really present in younger spiders as it fades with each molt. Their unique coloration has also made them quite popular in the pet trade.

Diving Bell Spider (Argyroneta aquatica)

Also known as the water spider, the diving bell spider is a species of spider native to northern/central Europe and northern Asia. The diving bell spider is the only known spider to live its entire live underwater. To accomplish this task the air-breathing diving bell spider traps air bubbles with hairs on its legs/abdomen. The bubbles line its body giving it a silvery appearance and allow it to breath. Females (males build them too but they are smaller) will build special webs known as “diving bells” which are filled with air and are used for housing, molting, mating and various other tasks, these underwater oases have to be replenished with oxygen everyone and awhile. Diving bell spiders usually inhabit oxygen-rich ponds and feed on small aquatic invertebrates and insects that pass by the bell (males swim for prey as-well).

Darwin’s Fox (Lycalopex fulvipes)

Also known as the Zorro Chilote or Darwin’s Zorro, Darwin’s fox is a critically endangered species of fox found only on Chiloe Island and Nahuelbuta National Park in Chile. Named after the famed naturalist Charles Darwin, Darwin’s fox like other foxes is an omnivore and will eat insects, small birds and mammals, and fruits and berries. Darwin’s foxes are primarily forest dwelling and tend to inhabit primary temperate forests and are most active at twilight and sunrise. Currently they are listed as critically endangered and there are only 320 individuals left, 250 on Chiole and around 70 on the mainland, Habitat loss and introduction of feral dogs and disease are major concerns for their survival.
